Why It's Difficult To Focus at Work After a Major Life Disruption

Posted on July 18th, 2025

Certain life transitions can affect your entire life.

One minute you're coasting through your usual work routine, and the next, even answering emails feels like solving a Rubik’s cube blindfolded.

Your brain's stuck in two places: trying to look sharp on Zoom while silently screaming inside.

And all the while, your coworkers look totally fine, as if no one had a personal challenge recently.

It could make you wonder: "what is wrong with me?" Here’s the truth: it’s not just you. When your world flips upside down, your focus is usually the first thing to diminish.

Tasks that once felt automatic now take twice the time and triple the effort. You’re mentally foggy, emotionally scattered, and wondering if you’ll ever feel like yourself again. . .

The Impact of Major Life Disruptions on Work Performance

When life throws a curveball such as a divorce, it doesn’t just stay neatly in your personal lane. It crashes straight into your workday, hijacks your brain, and turns focus into a rare commodity.

Your mental & emotional drive is just overloaded and the chaos eats up bandwidth, and suddenly, tasks that used to take 15 minutes now feel like climbing a mountain with no shoes on . . .

With divorce, it's a breakup with a full-body, full-brain and full-life experience.

You may show up to work, but your thoughts may be stuck in court documents, child custody logistics, emotional overwhelm or just figuring out how to breathe. Even the simplest email can take forever to write.

Forgetfulness, zoning out in meetings, being indecisive, or crying silently in your office after presenting an important milestone to your colleagues? All are par for the course.

When you’re leading a team, your focus can spread thin. That’s why being deliberate about seeking assistance is so critical; both for your sanity, and for the workplace.

The experience is physical exhaustion coupled with emotional fatigue.

Missed (or almost missed) deadlines, work product that doesn't represent your best, and a general sense that you’re behind before the day even starts?

These disruptions don’t mean you’re broken. They mean you’re human.

On the other hand, you may become over-indulgent into your work responsibilities to the point of being on auto-pilot. You use it as a distraction but somehow being pre-occupied with emotional overwhelm still surfaces.

These disruptions don’t mean you’re broken. They mean you’re human.

What matters is recognizing the toll this take on you and creating space; both personally and professionally for a reset.

These experiences are normal, not weaknesses, and acknowledging this makes room for recovery, and for the return of productivity.

Strategies for Regaining Focus at Work

There is shift that needs to occur after such a major life transition and trying harder, though admirable, is not the key. Your brain's been through a storm so intentional work has to be done.

First off, being present; not just physically at your desk, but mentally in the moment, can make a world of difference. Use mindfulness which is a way to tell your brain to relax and sometimes to be still.

A few minutes of focused breathing, or even a short walk can quiet the internal chaos.

Work on one thing at a time, make a list; a daily agenda, if you will. If you are unable to concentrate and you continuously try to conquer a mountain of tasks, it will only lead to frustration.

Recognize the bite-sized wins in your personal and profession life. . .

Talk to someone in your support network. If there are any mental heath issues that surfaces (i.e., depression, anxiety), seek the assistance of a therapist.

Emotional clutter is sneaky. You might think you’re just tired, when really, you’re carrying mental baggage that needs unpacking.

Focus doesn’t return because you force it. It returns when you make enough space for it to land and when you're not too proud to admit you need help and actually seek it.

The Role of Emotional Recovering After a Divorce

Once the paperwork is signed and the dust starts to settle, divorce stops being a legal event and can become a mental minefield.

The outside world might expect you to bounce back like it’s just another day, but internally, things get complicated fast.

Your mind’s juggling emotional bruises, a shattered routine, and a million unanswered questions. If focus feels like a lost art right now, it doesn't mean that you failed.

The real work begins when you're no longer just “going through it” but actually working on rebuilding something new.

Your brain may whisper pessimistic questions: "What did I do wrong?" "Why can't I move on faster?" "How did they just move on?"

If left unchecked, those thoughts can take over your mind space. That’s why the way forward depends on how you manage the emotional overwhelm.

Conversing with someone who understands and can relate to the weird guilt of feeling like you've failed, and the experience of heartbreak & disappointment simultaneously, is priceless! It also helps remind you that your experience isn’t an anomaly.

This perspective allows you to focus on your actual life, not just your past.

Self-compassion becomes your fuel and is the best way to manage the internal voice you live with 24/7. Being kind to your process lets your nervous system settle, which makes it easier to think clearly and stay present.

Eventually, momentum returns and you start to embark upon a reset which is necessary in realigning with your value and rediscovering you.
